UECHI-RYU: (Background information and core techniques)

The Kata:

UECHI/SHOHEI-RYU

Martial Arts Study is a Path to Inner Peace.

The name of this system is Shohei-ryu, “SHO” which means shine brightly and "Hei" which means fairness or peace depending on the context in which it is used.

Senior Instructors on Okinawa adopted the name after the passing of Kanei Uechi in 1991.

Uechi/Shohei Ryu appears to be a "short stance" system originating in a Province of china over one hundred years ago. A famous Southern Shaolin temple may have practiced and/or in other Kwoons (schools), it may be that the system as presently taught was found to exist in other disciplines that differently "evolved” from a common system in China.

Core techniques include: Wa Uke (circular block), Shomen Geri (frontal Sokuto Geri 9 side blade kick), Yoko Geri (side thrust kick), Gyaku-zuki( twist punch), Shuto Uchi (knife hand strike), Shotei Uchi (palm/claw strike). Many additional techniques are shown and practiced some order implicit in the Uechi systems and others which have assimilated from disciplines.

The core of Uechi-Ryu/Shohei Ryu Practice consists of the following methods that include the "core techniques":

1.Jubi Undo (traditional warm up exercises)

2.Hojo Undo (traditional basic technique/self defense drills)

3.Kontiki Tai (traditional two man conditioning and body sensitivity/conditioning drills)

4.Kata (traditional form practice )

5.Bancai (Bunkai) (Application of Kata techniques) two man sets.

6.Jui Kumite (free sparring)
