Some
possible cross training benefits for Uechi Ryu karate
practitioners from Chinese martial arts.
I
have been engaged in the study of Uechi Karate with moderate
success since 1977. It had been said many times that its strength
stems from it's elegant simplicity. This certainly seems correct
to me.
Yet
hidden in the predominant stance, Sanchin, is a depth of strength
that only the most naturally athletic or gifted student or the
most diligent explorer of the art and stance can readily discern.
I
have also studied certain Internal Chinese arts which have
similar but differently expressed principles to those contained
in the Kata which we study every week, or every day.
These
arts are:
Iron
Shirt 'Chi Kung (Chi Work) , Tai Chi Chi Kung I (both as defined
by Mantak Chia, and Yang System Tai Chi) in one of its many
variants. One is not generally allowed to study The Tai Chi Chi
Kung of Master Chia without first been introduced to his Iron
Shirt Chi Kung. As I (re) write this I note that there are many
Chi Kungs, any many that I am not familiar with or have never
heard of
At
the risk of reintroducing the specter of controversy and
animosity on the point, I restate that it appears to my eye that
Sanchin is a generic sort of Chi Kung. That, therefore, is the
