YAKUSOKU  KUMITE

When this Kumite was first introduced we called it, or it was called, "Okikukai" and it was intended to embody the lessons the Okinawan Karate Association wished to infuse into the system now called Shohei Ryu.

 

The notes set forth are from the typewritten copy of the Kumite I received from Sensei Jack Summers which I believe were typed and prepared by Sensei Steve Banichek.

 

"Notes:

A. All punches are seiken zuki (regular fist punch) unless otherwise indicated .

 

B. Always begin left foot forward unless otherwise indicated.(All defenses begin left, all attacks start left except for #3, #5, #9 and #10.).

 

Point One:

 

Attacker Starts in a left stance; Then steps into a right stance and executes a right punch towards the Defender's chest or middle are(A.)

After defender has completed his counter, and come to a kamae

 

position, Attacker takes two steps back.

 

Defender Starts in a left stance, as Attacker delivers his attack, he moves back and to his left slightly "off line", blocks Wauke right, as he completes his retreat a right stance, he delivers a shomen geri from the forward foot to rib area, with kiai. Defender withdraws the kick to the rear (back to a left stance), goes to Kamae, and takes two steps forward towards attacker as Attacker takes two steps back.

 

This post sequence stepping in a method of teaching patience, discipline and a teaching aid to the instructors.

 

Point Two:

 

(A.) starts in a Left Sanchin stance.

 

(D.) Starts in a left Sanchin stance.

 

(A.)steps in and punches right to the chest area

 

(D.) steps back and to the left, ending in a right stance while blocking right wauke.

 

(A.) Steps in and punches left to the chest area

 

(D.) steps to the right rear into a "horse stance, executing a left wauke block, right reverse punch to A's rib area, with a kiai.

 

(A.) clears and step back to right sanchin, then takes two steps back.

 

(D.) clears, adjust towards centerline, while rear foot up to make a left sanchin stance, two steps forward.
